On June 20 of this year, at the initiative of the Public Organization “Public advisors of the Republic of Tajikistan” and the “AZIYA” Television and Radio Company, a round table was held on the topic “The role of the state, the public and the media in preventing and combating torture”. We remind you that this initiative was made possible within the framework of the project “People’s Assessors against Torture!”, which is implemented with the financial support of the “International Partnership for Human Rights – IPHR”. This event was organized and held dedicated to the “International Day Against Torture”, which falls on June 26.
This event was attended by the Head of the Representative Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Sughd Region – Khamidova Kh., the leading specialist of the Representative Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Sughd Region – Mamajanova M., Deputy Head of the Department of Justice of the Sughd Region – Samadzoda I.A., specialist of the management department Justice of the Sughd region – Izozoda N., head of the department of the garrison court of the Sughd region – Kholzoda M.Sh., deputy head of the department of criminal punishments for the Sughd region – Jamilzoda F.M. , investigator of the State Criminal Investigation Department – Makhmadov U.A., judge of the court of the Sughd region – Akhmadzoda F., lawyer of the Bar Association of the Sughd region – Farrukh Abdulla, consultants of the People’s Court of the Sughd region, representatives of the public organization “World rights” and “Public advisors of the Republic of Tajikistan”, which are part of the “Coalition against Torture”.
During the event, the following questions were discussed:
– What is torture? What legal act recognizes torture as a crime? Provide information on actual examples of torture and the punishments applied. How can people who have been convicted of torture report what happened? and some other questions.
In the concluding part of the event, the participants came to the conclusion that not only to increase the legal awareness of the population, but also to increase the level of education of the employees of various structures on responsibility for violation of human and citizen’s rights, it is necessary to work together regularly. At this point, the event was concluded.
