The National Association of Independent Media of Tajikistan (NANSMIT) and the Media Alliance of Tajikistan (IAT) congratulate their colleagues on the International Day of Solidarity of Journalists and call on journalists from all over the world to be united and ready to fight for their professional rights.
Journalism does not recognize borders. Journalism has no nationality, religion, or race. There is only dedication to the profession. Freedom of speech does not depend on what language you write in. Honesty, objectivity, reliability of information-this is what unites and consolidates journalists around the world.
Today, Tajik journalists need solidarity more than ever, regardless of the form of ownership of the media in which they work. The expression “one in the field is not a warrior” is very applicable to journalists: in the face of increasing official pressure, only solidarity will help journalists to remain honest and not betray the principles of impartiality and objectivity.
We are not alien to what is happening around us. With the coming to power of the “Taliban “(a terrorist organization banned in Tajikistan) Afghanistan was facing a humanitarian catastrophe. In recent days, there has been a growing wave of fake, fabricated, false and manipulated news about the events in Afghanistan in the media and social networks. Understanding the essence of the post-truth era, we urge you to resist the spread of fake news and disinformation in society in order to prevent the legitimization of terrorists.
At the same time, while remaining committed to the principles of global citizenship, we express our solidarity to our colleagues from Afghanistan – real patriots of their country, who even in conditions of total control by medieval obscurantists manage to fulfill their professional duties. Our expression of solidarity to our Afghan colleagues is an example of the unity of brothers in Peru in the face of a common enemy – total censorship.
Today, journalists have to risk not only their reputation, but sometimes their lives to remain faithful to their duty. We see such dedication among colleagues from all over the world, in particular in Afghanistan, who are at the forefront of the struggle for freedom of speech and information. They give their lives, but they do not mar their professional honor. I bow low to them for the lessons of courage and professionalism. The whole civilized world is proud of them.
